Exercise

Exercise affects our mental health in several ways. Exercise signals a release of serotonin, a lack of which is associated with depression. Exercise also mimics symptoms of anxiety, but, because of serotonin releases, we form positive associations with these symptoms, decreasing our sensitivity towards stress.

Try these tools to build a healthy exercise routine:

1

Make Exercise Social

Get a few friends together to exercise as a group — being with friends can be a welcome distraction while working out. This will also help you and your friends stay accountable and stick with your goals.

2

Try Something New

You don't have to be a runner to be fit! Find a new exercise or workout routine that you enjoy. Try Power Yoga, Zumba, or Pilates, or mix it up and try a combination of exercises.

3

Be patient

If you haven't exercised in a while, remember to listen to your body and work up to more advanced exercises. Be patient with yourself and try to enjoy seeing yourself get stronger physically, emotionally, and mentally.
